Ceramic pots were widely used during the 19th and early 20th century to house household products such as toothpaste, cold creams, hair products, and some food stuffs.

Pots produced came in various shapes and sizes and had numerous designs including black and white printed lids, lids with coloured print, pictorial lids, and also multi-coloured Prattware type lids.

There were of course also plain lids to which paper labels were applied, but these do not survive in any great numbers given that the labels would not have survived having being buried in a tip.
