Walter Sherratt Snr. was born circa 1851 in Congleton, Cheshire. In 1871 aged 20 he was working in Heaton Norris  as a Grocer's Assistant. By 1881 he had returned to live in Congleton, and at that time he was trading as a 'Tallow Chandler' (candle maker) By 1891 he had changed trades to become a Mineral Water Manufacturer, based at 67 Lawton Street Congleton, and was listed as the same again on the 1901 census. On the 1901 return his eldest son, Edward Howe Sherratt (aged 18) was listed as a Mineral Water Salesman. His second eldest son, Walter Jnr, was at this point aged 14. Walter Snr. passed away in October 1903. So, was it Walter Jnr. who later set up business in Burslem? There is definitely a link between the Congleton business and the Burslem one, as both used a wheatsheaf as a trade mark.
